2024 Strategic Speakers
Juliana Leung is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the School of Mining and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Alberta. She is a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Data Analytics in Subsurface Flow Systems. She holds a BSc (distinction) in chemical engineering from the University of Calgary and an M.S. and Ph.D. in petroleum engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Her professional experiences include working as a reservoir engineer at Shell Canada Ltd. and summer internships at the Sandia National Laboratories and ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company in Houston. She led a research program supported by multiple government funding agencies and industrial partners. Her team uses machine learning and numerical simulation to analyze and design subsurface flow systems encountered in many energy extraction and fluid storage applications. She has authored and co-authored over 160 journal and conference papers and one book. She is an executive editor for Geoenergy Science and Engineering and the Secretary-General for the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences.
