Biogas: "The Danish Army Knife"

Biogas is an often overlooked green energy source, which benefits’ extend beyond decarbonization of our energy systems, making it a “Swiss army knife” of the green transition.

Denmark has successfully developed a biogas sector, where 40% of Denmark’s gas consumption derives from biogas. Biogas plays a integral part in Denmark’s energy system, where biogas provides flexibility in a system relying heavily on fluctuating renewable energy. But biogas is not only contributing to the energy system, it has several advantages that the agricultural sector in Denmark appreciates.

Empower Utility Load Forecasting with Generative AI

Utilities worldwide are heavily investing in developing and maintaining accurate forecasting models. However, they face a significant challenge as the number of required models continues to grow. This increase is driven by two key factors: the expanding number of assets that need monitoring and the rising necessity to predict grid status due to the growing penetration of renewable energy sources. From grid modernization and renewable operations to trading, forecasting needs span multiple business lines within a utility. Each line is developing and maintaining numerous models, in some cases amounting to thousands, leading to substantial implementation and maintenance costs.
Generative AI has demonstrated the remarkable capabilities of models that can encapsulate vast amounts of text data.

The First-Ever AI System for Automated Isolation Procedures

The primary objective of this project is to revolutionize the way isolation procedures are created in processing facilities. Isolation procedures are vital for ensuring safety during maintenance operations, as they prevent accidental exposure to hazardous materials or conditions. Currently, this process is carried out manually by plant engineers, taking several days to complete and leaving room for human error. This project aims to develop an AI-powered system capable of automating the creation of these procedures using P&IDs, ensuring accuracy, speed, and reliability. By addressing the inefficiencies and risks associated with traditional methods, the tool seeks to reduce industry incidents and improve operational safety on a global scale.

Beyond Amine - Emerging Technologies in Carbon Capture

This presentation will focus on the most promising carbon capture technologies that are quickly approaching commercial deployment. At present amine-based carbon capture is the technology of choice for large scale carbon capture projects in development today. One key reason for this is the technical maturity of the process. The gas processing industry has used amines to remove acid gases (including CO2) from natural gas for decades. This results in amine-based carbon capture having a technology readiness level (TRL) of 9. This is a major incentive for CCS project developers as they navigate the engineering phases of their projects, as selecting amine-based technology is seen as less risky than other capture technologies.

Application of Satellite and Aircraft Measurements in Methane Emissions Reduction

As the world grapples with the effects of climate change, increasing attention is being paid to the sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which are the main culprits of ozone layer depletion responsible for global warming and its resultant climate consequences. Carbon di-oxide (CO2) is the most consequential GHG responsible for about three-quarters of emissions and notorious for the length of time it lingers in the atmosphere once released – thousands of years. A lot of research has gone into understanding CO2, including methods to reduce its prevalence like Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS), Direct Air Carbon Capture (DACC), and others.

Advancing Hydrogen Sustainability: Pathways for Alberta’s Energy Industry

Hydrogen, a low-carbon energy source, is critical to Canada’s net-zero climate goals. It can be produced from diverse feedstocks and pathways, including electricity, natural gas, and biomass, but assessing trade-offs across these pathways remains limited. Most studies focus on either environmental or economic aspects, neglecting the integrated perspective of sustainability’s three dimensions: environmental, economic, and social. This study addresses this gap by conducting a comprehensive lifecycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) of hydrogen production pathways in Alberta, Canada.

From 50% Oxygen Pyrolysis Oil to SAF and Renewable Diesel

The biofuels market is expected to grow at an annual rate of 8.3%, reaching $US 243.4 billion as early as 2033 – primarily led by fuels produced from food crop sources (ethanol, soybean oil, canola oil, etc.). However, as the global population expands, securing adequate land for food production will be prioritized, putting a ceiling on acreage available for fuel production. Fortunately, bio-based crude oils from non-food crop sources like agriculture, forestry and municipal waste are attracting considerable attention as they are readily produced from known processes like hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) and pyrolysis. However, bio-oils produced from these methods are notorious for having both high water and oxygen content, among other impurities.

Overcoming Mechanical Failure to Maintain Energy Supply in Renewable Energy Systems

Mechanical failures in renewable energy systems can disrupt operations and risk financial and reputational losses, especially during periods of peak demand. This presentation dives into a compelling real-world case study of a 50 MW direct flow (run-of-river) hydroelectric facility that faced a catastrophic mechanical failure just one week before the vital spring melt. A compromised seal in the water supply line led to flooding in the powerhouse and significant damage to generator unit 1. The story of how this renewable energy producer responded with resilience and innovation offers valuable lessons for tackling crises in critical infrastructure.

Aquistore: Key Learnings from Core in a Deep Saline Aquifer CO2 Storage Well

Aquistore is a project in Saskatchewan, Canada that takes captured anthropogenic CO2 from the Boundary Dam coal fired power plant, storing it in the Cambrian Deadwood Formation at a depth of 3400m. Injection and observation wells were drilled in 2012, with injection beginning in 2015, and the site has now successfully stored 600,000 tonnes since project initiation. During drilling of this well, a focus was maintained on reservoir and seal characterization. With this in mind, a robust diamond core and sidewall coring program was undertaken. Typical core analyses of porosity, permeability, and fluid composition were taken and have been reported.
