On September 8, 2023, the Canadian government announced a $25 million investment in the Weavers Mountain Wind Energy Project, as part of its commitment to creating a more sustainable and prosperous future. The project, which is a majority-Indigenous-owned partnership between Glooscap Energy LP and SWEB Development LP, aims to supply nearly 95 megawatts (MW) of zero-emissions power to Nova Scotia’s electricity grid.

This investment will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 165,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year, but it will also power nearly 14,000 homes annually. Additionally, the project will create an estimated 230 new jobs, contributing to the growth of the local economy.

The Weavers Mountain Wind Energy Project plays a significant role in Nova Scotia’s goal of achieving 80-percent renewable energy by 2030. It aligns with Canada’s commitment to achieving a net-zero electricity system by 2035. By investing in clean energy projects, the government aims to provide clean and affordable energy to homes and businesses while generating good jobs for future generations.

The funding for the Weavers Mountain Wind Energy Project is part of Canada’s $1.56-billion Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program (SREPs). This program aims to replace fossil-fuel-generated electricity with renewable energy, battery storage, and grid modernization solutions. It also supports Canada’s transition to a net-zero economy by 2050 and helps the country meet its Clean Electricity Regulations objectives.

The Weavers Mountain Wind Energy Project is not only beneficial from an environmental standpoint but also contributes to local community development. The project expects to provide benefits to underrepresented communities and local organizations in Nova Scotia. Moreover, over the project’s 25-year operational lifetime, it will bring significant tax revenues to the Municipality of Pictou County.

By investing in renewable energy projects and partnering with Indigenous communities, workers, and industry, Canada is taking steps towards a cleaner and more reliable grid. This investment in the Weavers Mountain Wind Energy Project demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting local communities, Indigenous leadership, and building a clean and affordable electricity grid across the country.
