Feature Presentation: The SAIT-LUTW Partnership: Working Together to Improve Energy Access for Remote Peruvian Communities

  • pr-alarm1:30 AM - 2:00 PM
  • pr-locationNextGen Booth

Access to affordable electricity is essential for human development and the modern way of life. However, it is estimated that globally, over 700 million people currently do not have access to electricity. For regions the world with favourable solar resources, small off-grid photovoltaic sys-tems offer a proven technology for bridging the energy gap, but without the aid of donors and volunteers, it remains inaccessible and unaffordable to many.

Light Up the World (LUTW) is a Canadian non-profit organization with the conviction that ac-cess to energy changes lives, and an investment in a an off-grid PV system for an impoverished community is an investment in their health, education and economic development. LUTW part-ners with volunteers to provide affordable off-grid PV energy systems for remote communities in developing countries and has facilitated four Peru-based field study programs for SAIT Electri-cal Engineering Technology (EET) student volunteers. These immersive field trips support LUTW’s core mission while allowing EET students to experience and understand energy poverty and the challenges facing remote and impoverished communities, to engage in humanitarian en-gineering and demonstrate global citizenship, and to gain authentic field experiences related to off-grid PV systems. These field trips also provide students with unique, life-enriching social, cultural, recreational and travel experiences.

The intention of this presentation is to share some of the experiences gained from a 2024 field trip to install an off-grid PV system for the Ipi Pata primary school in Huancavelica province, Pe-ru. The presentation will provide an overview of the technical project and its rationale, as well as reflect on the experiences gained by student volunteers.

Feature Presentation: Water and Energy Nexus for Sustainable Urban Growth

  • pr-alarm11:00 AM - 11:30 AM
  • pr-locationNextGen Booth

The Water-Energy nexus plays a crucial yet often overlooked role in urban development, especially in dynamic cities like Calgary. Imagine the city's cooling towers, boilers, and turbines all depending on water to keep buildings warm and generate electricity. This connection between water and energy is vital: we need water to produce energy, and energy to treat and distribute water. To make urban growth sustainable, we must integrate smart technologies and data to manage these resources better. By embracing innovative tech and changing our behaviors, we can optimize how we use water and energy, reduce waste, and build resilient cities. This means a greener, smarter future where sustainable living is within our grasp.
