Technology Showcase: Direct Contact Steam Generation (DCSG) – Monetizing Emissions Reductions: Lessons from our CRIN-funded project
- 3:30 PM - 3:45 PM
GERI’s DCSG technology co-injects steam and the combustion exhaust gases created when producing steam, permanently storing CO2 under the ground. Injecting flue gases into an oil reservoir also provides significant recovery benefits. Quantifying what the actual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions are is one thing, but what customers really want to know is what the financial implications are of these GHG reductions. Calculating/estimating the financial benefits is complex though as it depends on multiple factors such as how the reductions are measured (eg: defined emissions boundaries), relevant legislative jurisdiction and benchmarks, and project specificities and reservoir properties.
This presentation addresses 2 common questions: 1) What are the carbon credits available from injecting and storing CO2 underground and 2) What is the total emissions tax reduction including the benefits from improved oil recovery.
These questions were answered through work done with Brightspot, a third-party environmental consultancy agency who will be co-presenting, and who were originally hired by GERI to validate GERI’s emissions measurement plan on a Q4 2023 CRIN-funded pilot.
